Who We Are
Whom We Serve
Neurological impairment or brain injury can result from a variety of incidents such as automobile accidents, falls, strokes, tumors or disease. In considering admissions, HIRRS reviews the individual's capacity to benefit from services. In most circumstances individuals admitted to HIRRS are adolescents or adults, are medically stable and are capable of attending a community based program. In some cases, HIRRS is able to serve individuals who have not had a documented brain injury, but would benefit from the services the agency provides. HIRRS reviews each case in order to determine the services that will best serve the individual. HIRRS also assists individuals in determining and locating funding sources, if necessary. HIRRS serves individuals in Maryland, DC, and VA. The agency is located close to public transportation including the Rockville Metro station. Other transportation arrangements are also available.
History
In a typical scenario, an individual who sustains a brain injury is initially treated in an acute care facility such as a hospital or trauma center. After the person's medical status is stabilized, he or she is discharged and expected to return to their previous lifestyle, often with little or no rehabilitation and follow-up. Research indicates that in such cases, individuals with brain injury are highly likely to suffer losses in areas such as their employment, relationships, and independence. HIRRS was formed in 1991 to bridge the gap between acute care and a person's return to a productive lifestyle in the community. The program was developed by Beverly Whitlock whose personal and professional experiences in brain injury allowed her a unique perspective of the problems faced by individuals and families. As HIRRS enters its 15 th year, Ms. Whitlock remains the guiding force behind the organization.
